And the last came first.
First of all, I must explain that these pictures from France are not in order. We were in the countryside early in the trip, and Paris for the last four days. And these pics are of the very last day.
The Day of the Dead. Which is quickly becoming one of my favorite holidays. (Remember last year I set up a little memorial altar in my house?)
So where does one go on a fabulously sunny day in Paris on the Day of the Dead?
Pere LaChaise Cemetery, that's where. I've been wanting to go there ever since I read about it in National Geographic years ago.
Cemeteries in France are a riotous affair. This scene is typical.
This is probably the most famous cemetery in the world. Famous painters, performers, heads of state are buried here. This is the monument to all of the dead.
And this? Jim Morrison's grave. A small but steady stream of pilgrims crowded to see it. It is hallowed ground for the rock and roll faithful. I was expecting something extraordinary, but Jim's is one more grave among the many.
And this is my favorite. The spookiest of all and quite beautiful. Who is this apparition? The one buried below the crypt? The lover who pines?

I don't know, Patty. A 19th century Parisian, I guess.
Miss you, too, Michelle. And yes--Paris was very reasonable! Everybody go! Soon!
