Weekend with Mom
Last weekend, Greg's mom and cousin Judy came to visit. They wanted to see things that we hadn't seen yet. So we packed up the big car and went to Bath, in England.
Shortly after the beginning of the Christian Era, the Romans invaded England and Wales. They built fortresses and secured the western edge of their empire. But here, in Bath, they found something they didn't expect, an underground hot spring, dedicated to the Celt goddess, Sulis. Above, the remains of the main bath house.
They could not believe their good fortune, and quickly turned the site into a sacred temple, dedicated to Minerva. Those crafty Romans, however, knew how to merge traditions, and the temple for Minerva became the temple dedicated to Sulis Minerva. Above, part of the recovered pediment of the temple. Is it a gorgon? Is it the sun god? Whatever it is, I thought it was gorgeous.
Horse. Mosaic from the site.
Kaity's waiting for everyone to finish looking around.
There's Mom, on ancient ground.
They stayed with us from Thursday to Sunday morning, then they flew off to Dublin. We took our leave at the Cardiff airport. Now they're home, with many many memories, souvenirs and photos.
