Yes, more cemeteries...

We left Amiens on Saturday morning, after some awesome French shopping, and struck out again for the countryside. What I didn't know was that this part of France saw major engagement for years during World War I (it was virtually the French front) and also during World War II. There are memorials and military cemeteries everywhere with thousands and thousands of graves. This is a British cemetery.
Here is my social commentary for the day. A few years ago, when the U.S. decided to invade Iraq, the French were not supportive. Americans were incensed to the point of renaming french fries, of all things. But what most of us did not understand is this...aside from seeing through the thinly disguised reasons to invade, the French saw two devastating wars on their soil in the 20th century. Entire villages destroyed, leaving thousands and thousands of civilians as refugees, marching through a war zone to wherever they could find shelter. And some of their homes were never rebuilt. A whole generation of boys died. I think this is why the French were non-supportive. They remember.
This is one soldier's grave. The epitaph:
Those who have loved and lost
Understand war's bitter cost.
Mother

On to Reims where there is yet another glorious cathedral. To be honest, I was getting a little cathedraled out on this trip. So here is the plaza, instead. It was swarming with people on a warm Saturday evening, and deserted the next morning.
And here is just a glimpse of the cathedral. These are windows by Chagall. He lived not too far away, and his son lives there still.

Wow, that's all I can say. Maybe now that the elections here on American soil have passed and the Democrats have won the house in congress back, we will be out of this useless war. We can only pray.

Aunt.Annie,

Do you have any pictures of buildings/ cathedrals besides the ones on your blog?

because I'm doing an art project where we are supposed to draw a building.

I've found a lot but I was wondering if you had any.

Love, Alex

Hi Alex,
I do, but I need to kind of look through them. Can I have a day or two to get them together for you?
We have company right now--Kaity and Kieron's grandma, and I don't want to be on the internet too much!
